What is NAMI

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is a grassroots,  non-profit (501-C-3)  self help, support and advocacy organization for individuals, families, and friends of people with severe mental illnesses such as Schizophrenia, Bi-polar Disorder, Schizoaffective Disorder, Depression, Anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder; those dealing with Personality Disorders such as Borderline Personality Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder; and from Addictions.

Founded in 1979, NAMI has more than 1,100 affiliates that seek equitable services for people with severe mental illness, addictions and personality disorders and serves thousands of people nationwide each month. NAMI provides education about severe brain disorders, supports increased funding for research, and advocates for adequate health insurance, housing, rehabilitation and jobs for people with serious psychiatric illness. NAMI also has affiliates in Puerto Rico, Canada, and American Samoa and has helped start sister organizations in Australia, Japan and the Ukraine.

NAMI Bowling Green is an affiliate of NAMI Kentucky and was begun November 17, 1986 by Mrs. Marty Harrison and other devoted/concerned family members. NAMI KY presently has 22 affiliates through-out Kentucky working on the national, state and local levels. We are privileged to have an affiliate in our city. November 2016 is our 30th Anniversary and we will celebrate our 30th year (2016-2017) as an affiliate.
